Over the past many days, I have been so touched by the many, many messages, calls, emails, notes, and posts of congratulations. Thank you for your incredible kindness, generosity, and love.
I am extremely honoured and genuinely humbled to have been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.
This has given me a chance to reflect on the extraordinary people who have shaped my journey. I have been so fortunate to work alongside remarkable leaders, colleagues, volunteers, donors, partners, and communities whose encouragement, friendship, generosity, and example have helped shape who I am today.
If my work has made a difference, it has always been as part of a much larger collective effort. This recognition belongs to the many people and communities who placed their trust in me, shared their experiences, and inspired and motivated me over the years.
My gratitude also goes to my family and close friends, whose love, encouragement, advocacy, and unwavering support have sustained me throughout the years. Your steadfast support has meant more than words can express. And to my husband, Rakesh Varma who has shared every step of this journey with me through the long days, the challenges, and the celebrations – thank you for giving me the courage and confidence I needed.
I am deeply grateful for this honour, and it’s important to remember that the issues and communities that have shaped my life’s work remain as important and urgent as ever. I hope this recognition helps shine a light on them and on the countless people who continue every day to build communities where everyone has the opportunity to belong, contribute, and thrive.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of walking alongside so many of you over the years. I accept this honour with profound gratitude, humility, and hope.
